What is a Flail Mower?

A flail mower is a type of mower designed to safely cut and mulch grass and vegetation. It uses many small blades or hammers, called flails, that spin on a horizontal shaft inside the mower deck cutting chamber.

Unlike rotary mowers, which use one or more sets of blades to cut grass, a flail mower uses multiple flails that swing freely to cut, shred, and mulch material inside the mower deck. This allows it to handle very long grass, weeds, and debris such as sticks and small branches. As vegetation is repeatedly struck inside the cutting chamber, it is broken down into finer pieces, resulting in an even, well-distributed mulch.

Flail mowers are commonly used where safety, durability, and residue control are important. Their enclosed design makes them well-suited to rough ground, roadside mowing, and areas with uneven terrain or debris.

Key Benefits of Flail Mowers

Improved safety – Enclosed cutting system helps contain debris and reduce projectile risk.

Fine mulching – Repeated cutting produces smaller clippings that break down quickly.

Durability – Built to withstand tough conditions, impacts, and heavy vegetation.

Even finish – Leaves a consistent, well-managed surface.

Reduced follow-up work – Fine mulch reduces the need for follow-up work.

How Does a Flail Mower Work

A flail mower is usually powered by a tractor’s PTO (power take-off), which turns a horizontal rotor inside the cutting chamber. Attached to this rotor are many small flails that swing freely as it spins.

As the mower moves forward, the flails strike the vegetation repeatedly, cutting and breaking it down into smaller pieces. The swinging action allows the flails to deflect on impact with hard objects, reducing shock loads and minimising damage to the mower.

Vegetation stays inside the cutting chamber long enough to be cut several times, creating a finer, more even mulch. The enclosed cutting chamber also helps keep debris contained, improving safety for both the operator and people nearby.

Where Flail Mowers Are Best Used

Flail mowers are ideally suited to applications where safety, mulching, and residue control are required, including:

  • Roadside and verge mowing where debris containment is critical
  • Council and contractor operations managing rough or variable vegetation
  • Horticulture and viticulture areas with sticks and debris
  • Sloped or uneven terrain requiring stable, controlled cutting
  • Applications where fine mulching and residue breakdown are preferred

Their ability to safely manage difficult vegetation makes flail mowers a trusted solution in demanding environments.
