Pegasus SR

For Moe Racing Club in Victoria, Australia, presentation is a key priority. Looking to maintain a high-quality finish while reducing the time and costs associated with mowing the course proper, Racecourse Manager Paul Graham turned to the Trimax Pegasus S5 SR 493 after seeing the results achieved at another Victorian racecourse.

Learning from Another Racecourse

When considering a new mowing solution, Paul turned to Geelong Racing Club Racecourse Manager Jim Dalton, who was already using a Trimax Pegasus. “I was on the phone to Jim, who gave absolute glowing reports, and then sent an array of video and reading material to just help us make the decision,” Paul says.

Quality of cut was one of the key points in Jim’s recommendation and something that immediately appealed to Paul. The potential to reduce mowing time was another major consideration, particularly because it would allow staff to focus on other areas around the facility. “If you can have staff doing other jobs of importance than mowing, I think that was a big selling point as well,” Paul explains.

Making the Case for the Pegasus

Paul’s confidence in the Pegasus was strong enough that Moe Racing Club made the decision to purchase the mower without having a demonstration first. Instead, he relied on Jim Dalton’s firsthand experience at Geelong Racing Club, his own research, and the information and videos available through Trimax.

Paul brought everything together in a three-page proposal for the Moe Racing Club committee, including the figures he had calculated, Jim’s recommendation, and supporting material from the Trimax website. “It was a three-page document that I put to committee, with all the figures that I’d discovered, also some video off the Trimax website, which is a great resource tool, and the recommendations from Jim Dalton,” Paul explains.

Despite committing to the Pegasus without seeing it operate at Moe first, the research and recommendation gave the club confidence in the decision. “The CEO of the club did come back and said it was one of the easiest decisions that the club had made for the entire year,” Paul says.

First Impressions on the Track

It didn’t take long for the Pegasus to make an impression. During the mower’s first 1,600-metre lap of the course, Paul immediately noticed how effectively the clippings were being dispersed. “The draft that comes from the rear of the machine and the throw of the clipping was outstanding,” he says. “We walked around, and it was very hard to find any clip on the surface.”

The consistency across the three mowing decks was another standout. “There was no variation in the cut, so it basically looked like it was just one full unit rather than being three separate units,” Paul says.

For a racecourse where presentation and surface quality are a priority, the difference was noticeable from the outset. Paul had already been proud of the standard the team was achieving, but felt the Pegasus took it further. “It was chalk and cheese to what we were presenting, which was always, in my eyes, very good, but we just went to that next level.”

From Five Hours to 80 Minutes

One of the most significant changes for Moe Racing Club has been the reduction in mowing time. “We’ve gone from a single mower, from five hours down to 80 minutes to cut the course proper,” Paul says.

The change in mowing setup has also removed the need to collect and dispose of grass clippings. Previously, Moe Racing Club was spending approximately $40,000 per year on clipping disposal because the local council did not allow the clippings to be stored on site. “That’s a saving of $40,000 just in clippings,” Paul explains.

Paul also estimates the club is using approximately 50–60% less fuel for mowing the course and expects annual mower servicing costs to be lower than those of its previous rough-cut mowers. Alongside the reduction in mowing time, these savings have helped make the Pegasus a valuable addition to the club’s grounds maintenance operation.

A Strong Recommendation for Other Racecourses

For Paul, the results on the track and the figures behind the purchase have reinforced Moe Racing Club’s decision to invest in the Pegasus. The mower has helped the team reduce the time spent mowing while achieving the consistent presentation they were looking for.

“If racecourses out there are considering it, I would seriously tell them to go down the track and go down the Trimax Pegasus line,” Paul says. “The figures that you look at on the whiteboard and on your spreadsheets just show that this machine ticks a lot of boxes, if not all the boxes.”

For Moe Racing Club, the Pegasus has delivered a significant change to how the course proper is maintained. With mowing time reduced from around five hours to approximately 80 minutes, no need to collect and dispose of clippings, and a consistent finish across the course, the team can spend less time mowing and more time maintaining the wider facility.
