David Binney has been growing avocados in Pahoia, north of Tauranga, for the past eight years. As his orchard matured, so did the challenges of managing grass, Kikuyu, and pruning material between rows. What started as a simple mowing setup quickly became a costly problem, one that David initially believed would require a completely new tractor to solve. Instead, the solution came in the form of a Trimax Ezeemow, changing how he manages his orchard for good.
When the Old Mower Reached Its Limits
When David first established the orchard, he chose a mid-mount slasher mower that came with a tractor. At the time, the orchard was young, and mowing was mostly grass, so a wide mower worked well. However, as the avocado trees grew, David found himself driving over pruning, causing the slasher to fail.
The spindles smashed, repairs became expensive, and replacement parts were difficult to source. When David explored repair options, he discovered that nothing was particularly compatible with his existing setup. Fixing the problem would likely mean purchasing an entirely new tractor just to run a new mower.
Doubts Proven Wrong
When the idea of switching to a rear-mounted mulching mower was suggested, David was unsure. He wanted his orchard grass to look neat and well-maintained, and he didn’t believe a mulching mower could deliver the same tidy finish as a traditional slasher.
“My thought of a mulcher mower was that it was a pretty rough agricultural implement and wouldn’t do a very good job,” David says. “Well that’s turned out wrong.”

Handling Kikuyu with Ease
Kikuyu presented another major challenge. When it grew too long, the mid-mount mower simply couldn’t cope. In contrast, the Trimax Ezeemow handled it with ease. David says the mulcher will mow through two-year-old Kikuyu and knee-high Kikuyu without issue, something his previous setup couldn’t achieve. This capability has given David confidence that no matter how heavy or overgrown the vegetation becomes, the Ezeemow can handle it.

Looking back, David sees the switch to the Trimax Ezeemow as a turning point in his orchard maintenance. “It’s fantastic,” he says. “And I wish I got one earlier.”
